Painting Posthumously. Truly Special Dog Portraits

Did you know that many of my dog painting commissions are for dogs that are no longer with us?  It’s never too late to celebrate the life of a much-loved family dog.

Today I’m going to share a case study with you.  Meet Scrubber, a beautiful, much loved mixed breed.

Scrubber was a much-loved childhood dog of a client and friend of mine, Write Legal.  Seeking a truly special gift for a big birthday celebration for her mum, Sally wrote to me asking if I could paint from old, pretty much black and white photographs from the 70’s.

Loving a challenge in my dog portraits, I asked her to send 8 photographs over to me, more if she had them.   Together we worked on the images, I dropped them into some graphics packages I work with on a daily basis, sharpened them up, cropped them down and made them a workable-from as possible.

We talked colours and together we pieced Scrubber’s tones, highlights, demeanour and more.

I returned to Sally a couple more times that I might when working with today’s photographs.  We made it work and I’m chuffed to bits to report that Sally’s mum was thrilled with her thoughtful gift which now hangs pride of place in her home.

Judith wrote me the following words, which I am happy to share with you.

I’m thrilled with the picture of scrubber painted by you that Sally gave me for my birthday. It’s an incredible likeness and almost feels as if he’s in the room with me wanting a walk! It captures the way he used to hold his head perfectly. Thank you very much.

So, it’s never too late.

Do you have a dog that you would like immortilised in paint?  They make beautiful gifts and I charge no more than my usual commissions.

Happy to chat anytime, email me on for more details.
