Painting Teddy the lhasapoo

As I extend my repertoire of painting dogs in oil, I was recently asked to paint the sweetest little Lhazapoo (a cross between a Lhasa Apso and a Miniature Poodle).

A request that happened to arrive at the perfect moment for practicing painting hairy dogs!

Meet Teddy, watch me paint and read a little about how I painted him below.

When a client sends me their images (normally over WhatsApp) I spend a little time sorting the photographs into those I can work with and others that will be great to have as backup reference materials.

I then spend a happy hour tweaking, lightening up, sharpening, and cropping my chosen images as needed.

Teddy was painted on an A4 canvas board, gessoed and prepped for painting in traditional oil paint.

Below is a film I made of painting him from start to finish. It’s sped up for ease and I hope you enjoy my hands going like the clappers! As you will see, there was lots of comings and goings, working flat and working propped up. The most important thing was to keep my hand light and get those lovely fluffy chops and huge eyes in.

Much love, Sam x
